“Britain is headed for power cuts in the next 3 – 5 years”, says forecaster James Woudhuysen. So what is contributing to the problem of current low levels of energy production and what are the big challenges we need to tackle?

James states his concerns regarding the current discussions on energy and discusses the imminent problem of power cuts that are likely to occur in the next 3 – 5 years. James believes that there is too much focus on sources of energy and not enough on finding new ways of producing it cheaply. Energy production should advance through serious capital investment, rather than labour-intensive methods.

He adds that there is too much delay. So, for example, decisions on nuclear investment and development are proceeding at a snail’s pace and there is ongoing hysteria around shale gas. The result is that we aren’t achieving anywhere near the levels of energy production we need to meet demand… or at a cost consumers want.

James is, however, optimistic that the new generations of engineers coming through universities will adopt a less risk averse approach… a more can, rather than can’t, do attitude.
